McTaba vs Maktaba: Yes, You're in the Right Place (And Here's What We Do)

People reach us through all kinds of spellings. We have seen maktaba, marktaba, mactaba, maktabaa, mctapa, mctabba, mcktaba, mctab, mctabaa, and plenty of creative combinations in between. Some people type "m taba" or "m-taba" or "mc taba" with a space. Others search for "the mctaba" or "mctaba labs" directly. All of those searches lead here, and all of them are welcome.

The confusion makes perfect sense. Our name looks and sounds a lot like "maktaba," which is an actual Swahili word with its own meaning. That is not a coincidence. We chose the name on purpose.

"Maktaba" (sometimes written "maktabaa") is the Swahili word for library. It comes from the Arabic root k-t-b, which relates to writing and books. Walk through Nairobi, Mombasa, or Dar es Salaam and you will see "maktaba" on bookshop signs and library doors. The word carries a sense of knowledge, learning, and access to information.

When we started McTaba Labs, we wanted a name that tied back to that idea. A library is a place where people come to learn, explore, and grow. That is exactly what we are building, except the "books" are codebases, the "reading rooms" are live project sprints, and the knowledge is full-stack software engineering.

"McTaba" is our take on the word. It is not a traditional maktaba (we do not lend out novels), but the spirit is the same: a place in Nairobi where anyone can walk in and learn the skills that change their career. So when people search for "maktaba Kenya," "maktaba bootcamp," "maktaba coding," or "maktaba academy," they are often looking for exactly what we offer, just with slightly different spelling.

Short version: maktaba is the Swahili word for library. McTaba is us. Same inspiration, same city, same mission to make knowledge accessible.
