We included programs that meet three criteria:

What you build

You ship 8 production applications over the 30 weeks. These include an M-Pesa payment system, a WhatsApp CRM, a chama savings platform, a booking system with M-Pesa deposits, and a multi-tenant business operating system as the capstone. Resume and LinkedIn optimization, mock technical interviews, access to McTaba's hiring partner network, and lifetime alumni community access. Career support begins during the later phases and continues after graduation.

Where it falls short

McTaba is a newer program compared to Moringa or ALX, which means a smaller alumni network and fewer verified placement statistics. The program demands roughly 20 to 25 hours per week, so it is difficult to complete alongside a demanding full-time job. And the curriculum is specifically built for African markets, which makes it less relevant if your goal is a Silicon Valley role with no connection to the continent.

Moringa School is one of the most recognized coding bootcamps in East Africa. Based in Nairobi, it has been operating for over a decade and has trained thousands of graduates. The school has strong relationships with Kenyan employers and a reputation that hiring managers in the region recognize.

What it covers

Moringa's core programs focus on full-stack web development. The curriculum typically covers HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Ruby or Python on the backend, and database fundamentals. Moringa has offered multiple tracks over the years, including software engineering, data science, and UX design. The specific curriculum details and track availability may have changed, so check their website for the current offering.

Duration and format

Programs have historically run around 20 weeks for full-time tracks, with part-time options available for learners who cannot commit full-time hours. This flexibility is a genuine advantage over programs that only offer a single format.

Moringa's pricing has varied over the years and across tracks. Some programs have offered scholarship options and income share agreements. Check their current website for accurate pricing.

Career support

This is one of Moringa's strongest areas. A decade of operation means established relationships with Kenyan tech companies, and their alumni network is substantial. Graduates have gone on to work at major Kenyan and international companies operating in East Africa.

Where it falls short

Moringa's curriculum has historically focused on a traditional web development stack. AI engineering is not a core part of their offering (as of our last check), and African Stack integrations like M-Pesa and USSD are not emphasized the way they would be in a program specifically built for the African market. If you need those skills, you will likely learn them on the job or through supplementary resources.

Moringa is a solid, proven option. If you value track record and employer recognition above everything else, it belongs on your shortlist.

ALX (backed by Sand Technologies, formerly ALX Africa) runs a large-scale software engineering program across multiple African countries. Its defining feature is the price: free or heavily subsidized for students. ALX has made tech training accessible to thousands of people who could not afford paid alternatives, and that contribution to the African tech ecosystem is real.

What it covers

The software engineering track draws from the Holberton School methodology. It covers a broad range of topics: low-level programming in C, Python, web development, system administration, DevOps concepts, and more. The breadth is greater than most bootcamps, which is a natural result of the longer timeline.

Duration and format

The program runs approximately 12 months. The learning model is peer-based: students work through projects together, teaching each other, with periodic mentor check-ins and evaluations rather than daily live instruction from professional developers. This builds self-reliance and collaborative skills, but it requires strong discipline to maintain momentum over a full year.

Cost

Free or heavily subsidized. This is ALX's strongest advantage, full stop. If budget is your primary constraint, ALX removes the financial barrier entirely.

Career support

ALX provides career services and access to a continental alumni network. The pan-African reach means exposure to opportunities across multiple countries, which matters if your goals extend beyond a single market.

Where it falls short

The peer-learning model means that when you are stuck at midnight, your support system is fellow students who may be equally stuck. There is less direct mentorship from experienced professional developers compared to instructor-led programs. The curriculum is internationally oriented, so M-Pesa, USSD, and WhatsApp integrations are not part of the core training. AI engineering is also not a primary focus as of our last check. And 12 months is a long time to maintain momentum, especially for learners juggling other responsibilities.

Andela started in Nigeria as a training program that selected high-potential developers, trained them, and placed them with international companies. The model has evolved significantly over the years. Today, Andela operates primarily as a talent marketplace connecting African developers with global employers, with learning components built into the platform.

What it covers

Andela's current model is less "bootcamp" and more "talent platform with learning pathways." Developers on the platform can access training resources, assessments, and community support. The specific curriculum depends on the pathway and role you are targeting. Andela's focus is on matching developers with employer needs, so the learning is often driven by what companies are hiring for.

Free for developers. Andela's revenue comes from the employer side: companies pay Andela to find and vet talent. This makes it an attractive option if you already have some development skills and want access to international job opportunities without paying for a training program.

This is Andela's core business. The entire platform is built around connecting developers with employers. If you get matched, Andela handles contracts, payments, and ongoing support. The employer connections are genuinely strong, particularly with international companies looking to hire African developers for remote roles.

Where it falls short

Andela is not a substitute for a structured training program if you are starting from zero. The platform works best for developers who already have demonstrable skills and want to find work. If you are a complete beginner, you will need to build your skills elsewhere first and then use Andela as a career platform. The learning resources on the platform are supplementary, not a comprehensive curriculum. AI engineering and African Stack integrations are not core parts of the offering.
