Graduation day is beautiful. The gown, the photographs, the proud parents, the WhatsApp status updates. Then Monday comes. Then Tuesday. Then three months pass and you are in a queue at a career fair with your brown envelope, standing behind 300 other graduates who studied the same thing you did at a different campus.
This is tarmacking. The Kenyan ritual of walking from office to office, dropping CVs, hearing "we will call you," and watching your phone stay silent. Studies from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics suggest youth unemployment sits around 12 to 14 percent officially, but the real figure, including those in precarious informal work, is much higher.
Now here is the thing nobody tells you while you are celebrating at the graduation party: the students who skip this queue are not the ones with the highest GPAs. They are the ones who spent their campus years building something an employer can see and test.
Coding is not the only skill that does this. But it is one of the most powerful, because the demand for developers in East Africa continues to grow while the supply of genuinely skilled ones remains small.
A CV says "I am a fast learner." A portfolio says "Here is a booking system I built that processes payments via M-Pesa. Click this button. It works."
The difference between these two things in a hiring manager's mind is enormous. One is a claim. The other is evidence. And in a market flooded with claims, evidence is everything.

You can build this portfolio while at campus. Two projects per year, starting in second year, gives you four to six projects by graduation. Each one teaches you something new. Each one makes your next project better. By the time you hand in your final year project, your portfolio already looks like it belongs to someone with professional experience.

A common mistake: assuming coding only helps if you want to be a software developer. It helps everywhere.
Banks in Nairobi want analysts who can write SQL queries and build automated reports. Marketing agencies want people who can set up tracking pixels, manage CMS platforms, and understand how websites work. NGOs want programme officers who can build simple data collection tools instead of relying on expensive consultants.
A commerce graduate who can build a spreadsheet automation tool in Python is more valuable than one who cannot. A journalism graduate who can scrape data from public websites and create interactive visualisations will get hired at a news desk before someone who only knows how to write longform.
Coding is not a career. It is a multiplier. Whatever career you choose, the ability to automate, build, and understand technology makes you better at it. And in a job market where employers receive 500 applications for one position, "better" is the difference between hired and still waiting.
Learning to code after graduation is possible. Plenty of people do it through bootcamps and self-study. But starting at campus gives you structural advantages that disappear the moment you leave.
Time. A university student has 15 to 25 free hours per week during semester and entire months during holidays. A recent graduate who needs income does not have the luxury of spending three months learning without earning.
Low expenses. If you are living at home or in a hostel, your monthly costs are low. You can invest in a KES 2,999 course or save for a KES 120,000 bootcamp without the pressure of paying rent, food, and transport for a household.
Campus resources. Wi-Fi (even if unreliable), computer labs, tech clubs, hackathons, and fellow students who are also learning. After graduation, you are on your own unless you pay for a coworking space.
Compounding time. If you start coding in second year and graduate after fourth year, you have 2 to 3 years of practice. A bootcamp graduate has 6 months. The gap in skill, portfolio depth, and confidence is visible in every interview.
The best time to start coding was two years ago. The second best time is this semester.
You do not need to plan for three months. You need to do one thing today.

That is it. You have started. The rest is repetition and escalation: harder projects, new languages, bigger challenges. But the first step is always the smallest. Open the editor. Write a line of code. See it appear in the browser. Something you typed became something visible. That feeling is what hooks you.
