KMTC graduates and TTC-trained teachers can transition into health-tech and ed-tech careers by adding basic coding and data skills to their existing domain expertise. Health-tech companies building EMR systems, telemedicine platforms, and NHIF claim tools need people who understand clinical workflows. Ed-tech startups building learning apps need people who understand pedagogy. Adding 6 to 12 months of coding training creates a rare profile that pure developers cannot match.
There is a meeting that happens at every health-tech startup in Nairobi. The developers are trying to build an electronic medical records system. They have the React skills. They have the database design. What they do not have is someone who has actually worked at a dispensary in Machakos and knows that the triage process is nothing like what the product spec describes.
So the software ships with beautiful interfaces that no clinical officer would actually use. The workflow does not match how a real facility operates. The terminology is wrong. The data capture forms miss critical fields. And the company wonders why hospitals are not adopting their product.
The same thing happens in ed-tech. Developers build learning platforms based on how they imagine classrooms work. But they have never stood in front of 60 Class 6 students in a school in Bungoma trying to teach fractions with one textbook shared between four children. The platform does not fit the reality.
This is where you come in. If you trained at KMTC as a nurse, clinical officer, or lab technician, you understand clinical workflows from the inside. If you trained at a TTC or studied education at university, you understand how learning actually happens in Kenyan classrooms. That knowledge is harder to acquire than coding skills. Companies can teach a developer to use React in six months. They cannot teach them what it feels like to do patient intake during a cholera outbreak.
Clinical Informatics Specialist. You bridge the gap between the clinical team and the software team. You translate medical workflows into product requirements that developers can build. You test whether the software actually works in a clinical setting. Companies like Savannah Informatics, MedAfrica, and county health departments running DHIS2 systems hire for this.
Health Data Analyst. Kenya's health system generates massive amounts of data through DHIS2, facility records, and NHIF claims. Someone needs to clean it, analyse it, and present it in ways that inform policy. A clinical officer who can also write SQL queries and use Tableau is exactly the profile NGOs and government agencies look for.
Product Tester and QA for Health Platforms. Before a health app ships, someone needs to test it against real clinical scenarios. "What happens when a patient has two files? What if the lab results come back negative but the clinician already prescribed treatment?" Only someone with clinical experience can ask these questions.
Customer Success and Training. When a health-tech company sells their EMR system to a county hospital, someone needs to train the staff. That someone needs to speak both medical and tech. If you are a trained nurse who also understands how the software works, you are the ideal trainer.
Notice that none of these roles require you to be a senior software developer. They require you to understand technology well enough to work alongside developers and bring your clinical expertise to the table.

Instructional Designer. You design the learning experiences inside digital platforms. What should the lesson flow look like? How do you break a concept into steps that a learner in Turkana can follow on a phone? What kind of assessment actually measures understanding, not just memorisation? Teachers know this. Developers do not.
Content Creator for Learning Platforms. Companies like Eneza Education, Kytabu, and M-Shule need people to create curriculum-aligned content for Kenyan students. A TTC graduate who can also format content for digital delivery (basic HTML, content management systems, multimedia tools) is the perfect hire.
Teacher Liaison and Support. Ed-tech products fail when teachers refuse to adopt them. A former teacher who understands the resistance ("I do not have time for this," "The students will just play games") and can address it is invaluable to these companies.
Product Feedback and Testing. Similar to health-tech QA. Before a learning app ships, someone needs to sit with it and ask: "Would a Standard 4 student in a public school actually use this? Does the Swahili translation make sense? Is the difficulty progression appropriate for the CBC curriculum?"
The good news: you do not need to learn as much as someone who wants to be a full-time developer. The skills you need are practical and targeted.

Months 10 to 12: Evaluate your options. If you have landed a role or freelance contracts that match or exceed your current income, consider transitioning. If not, keep building skills. You have lost nothing because the skills you gained are portable.
The key insight: your clinical or teaching experience does not expire. It becomes more valuable the moment you add tech skills to it. You are not starting over. You are building on top of a foundation that took years to create.
