Data Jobs in Kenya: Where They Are Posted and What They Ask For

Most Kenyan data jobs we found were posted in Nairobi, on MyJobMag and LinkedIn, by banks, insurers, airlines, health groups and NGOs. Of 62 ads, 56 were Nairobi roles and only 6 used a junior title. Most asked for a degree and a median of three years of experience.

In this article

  1. 1. Where data jobs are posted
  2. 2. The job titles, and how senior they are
  3. 3. Who hires: sectors and named employers
  4. 4. What the ads ask for: degree, years and place
  5. 5. How to use this if you are starting out

Where data jobs are posted

McTaba runs coding and data bootcamps in Kenya. This guide is written to be useful whether or not you ever join one.

Think of a Kenyan data job as a notice pinned on three boards at once. (For the whole career map, see the data science career guide for Kenya.) The boards differ in what they show you, so it helps to know which to open.

  • MyJobMag Kenya. It has a field page for data and research roles that lists new ads daily, with the posting date on each (MyJobMag data science jobs, checked on 3 November 2026). Its search returned 35 ads for "data analyst" and 33 for "data engineer" that day (data analyst search, data engineer search, checked on 3 November 2026).
  • LinkedIn Jobs Kenya. Its public page headed "230 Data Analyst Jobs in Kenya" on the day we looked, but the keyword match is loose: research, finance and monitoring roles sit beside real analyst jobs (LinkedIn data analyst jobs, checked on 3 November 2026). It carries more multinational and fintech names, such as Wave Mobile Money, M-KOPA and Optasia.
  • BrighterMonday. Its data pages were nearly empty when we searched (BrighterMonday data analyst search, checked on 3 November 2026). Many Kenyan employers use it for general roles, not data ones.

Employer careers pages and referrals cover the rest. Banks and telcos often hire through their own sites. Our count below covers only what MyJobMag listed, so it understates the market. The method for the count, and the tool tally, are in what Kenyan employers ask for: Excel, Power BI or Python. This page uses the same 62 ads for a different cut.

The job titles, and how senior they are

The 62 ads fell into four families by title: 26 analyst, 19 data engineer, 15 data scientist and 2 business intelligence (MyJobMag searches, checked on 3 November 2026).

The titles were not tidy. The same work hid under "Commercial Data Analyst", "Forensic Data Analyst", "Drone Data Analyst" and "Analyst Master Data". Search for the verb, not just the title: report, forecast, clean, reconcile, model.

Seniority was skewed upwards. Eleven titles carried senior, lead, head, manager or advisor. Only six carried junior, intern or assistant. The other 45 had no level in the title (MyJobMag data scientist search, checked on 3 November 2026).

Look at what that means for a beginner. The ads that are open to you are mostly the unlabelled ones, which ask for one to three years. A junior data scientist title appeared twice, at Pezesha and at the African Centre for Data Science and Analytics. Our comparison of the three roles shows which of them has the lowest barrier to entry.

Who hires: sectors and named employers

Grouping the 62 ads by employer, by our own judgement, gave this picture.

If these are the employers you want to work for, the Data Science to AI Engineering syllabus is built around their data: mobile money, credit and fraud.

Money moves where data is. Banks and insurers hold years of customer transactions and need people who can model credit risk, fraud and claims. That is why a mobile money project such as analysing an M-Pesa statement in Python speaks directly to a bank recruiter.

Government and research bodies also advertise: the MyJobMag field page listed a KEMRI data manager post in Kisumu and a KCB data architect post on its first screen (MyJobMag, checked on 3 November 2026).

What the ads ask for: degree, years and place

Degree. The qualification field on 60 of the 62 ads listed a bachelor's or HND. Four also accepted a diploma. Eight listed a master's, and one a PhD, among the accepted levels (MyJobMag, checked on 3 November 2026). Most ads also named a numerate or technical field such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering or economics.

Years. Fifty-two ads stated a years band. The lower bound ran from 1 to 8 years, with three in the middle. By title, the middle lower bound was 2 years for analysts, 3.5 for data scientists and 4 for engineers (MyJobMag, checked on 3 November 2026). Eighteen ads started at two years or less, which is where a strong portfolio can carry you.

Place. Fifty-six of the 62 roles were in Nairobi. The rest were in Kiambu, Mombasa, Machakos, Homa Bay or described only as Kenya. Six ads mentioned remote work somewhere in the text (MyJobMag, checked on 3 November 2026).

Pay. Only one of the 62 ads printed a salary. Do not expect to learn pay from the ad. Our data analyst salary page with sources and its data scientist counterpart show what published surveys say, and how thin they are.

How to use this if you are starting out

  1. Set a MyJobMag alert for "data analyst" and "junior data scientist". Open ten ads and copy the verbs into your CV.
  2. Aim your first project at a sector in the table, for example a loan repayment study for the lender group. See the portfolio projects that get interviews.
  3. Prepare for the questions these employers ask. We list them in our data science interview questions for Kenya.

Training is only one way in. The Data Science to AI Engineering programme starts on 11 January 2027, and no school can promise a job. The ads above are the best guide to whether its syllabus fits the roles you want.
