Data Analyst Salary in Kenya, With Sources

Sources disagree. Paylab says 80% of Kenyan data analysts earn KES 40,231 to 155,656 gross a month. Payscale averages KES 504,822 a year, about KES 42,000 a month. One Kiambu job ad offered KES 50,000 to 100,000. We found no official pay survey, so treat all of these as rough.

What the sources say, side by side

McTaba runs coding and data bootcamps in Kenya. This guide is written to be useful whether or not you ever join one.

Picture a graduate with a job offer letter in one hand and three browser tabs open. One says analysts earn KES 40,000. Another says KES 150,000. Both look official. This page lines the tabs up, with the source, the sample size and the date on every figure, so you can see how far to trust each one.

We did not find a Kenya National Bureau of Statistics table for data analysts, and no recruiter's published salary guide that we could open. What exists are salary-survey sites and the occasional job ad. For the wider role, start with the data science career guide for Kenya. Here are the figures.

SourceWhat it reportsSample
Paylab, data analyst80% earn KES 40,231 to 155,656 gross a month. Full range KES 32,386 to 280,728. Average after 5 years KES 128,648.25 verified respondents
Payscale, data analystAverage base KES 504,822 a year (about KES 42,068 a month). Last updated 4 October 2026.130 profiles
Payscale, early careerUnder 1 year: average total pay KES 605,786 a year. 1 to 4 years: KES 503,357 a year.24 and 101 salaries
Paylab, database analyst80% earn KES 48,797 to 146,481 gross a month.Fewer than 20 respondents
Paylab, business intelligence specialist80% earn KES 50,472 to 176,574 gross a month.Fewer than 20 respondents

Sources: Paylab data analyst, Payscale data analyst, Paylab database analyst, Paylab business intelligence specialist and the Tropical Heat ad on MyJobMag, all checked on 3 November 2026. The monthly Payscale figure is our division by twelve. All Paylab figures are gross, before tax.

Why a low average can sit beside a high top band

The two big sources measure different things. Paylab shows a spread, the middle 80% of its respondents (Paylab, checked on 3 November 2026). Payscale shows one average of base pay (Payscale, checked on 3 November 2026). An average of KES 42,068 a month sits at the very bottom of the Paylab spread, because averages are dragged down by many junior salaries.

Three more reasons the numbers wobble.

  • Small samples. Paylab's analyst page rests on 25 people. Its database analyst and BI pages rest on fewer than 20 (Paylab, checked on 3 November 2026).
  • Messy tails. Payscale's own range for analysts runs from KES 7,000 at the 10th percentile to KES 2 million at the 90th, which is too wide to read as a market band (Payscale, checked on 3 November 2026). We ignore the tails and quote only the average and the sample.
  • Different jobs under one title. A "data analyst" at a distributor who builds weekly Excel reports and one at a bank who writes SQL for a credit team are not paid alike. See the three data roles compared.

Only one of the 62 data job ads we read on MyJobMag printed a salary at all (MyJobMag data analyst search, checked on 3 November 2026). So do not expect an ad to tell you what a post pays. Ask in the first interview.

What moves the number

Years. Paylab gives KES 128,648 a month after five years of experience, against a bottom tenth below KES 40,231 (Paylab, checked on 3 November 2026). Experience is the one factor every source agrees on.

Tools. The ads that asked for SQL, Power BI or Python were also the ones with bank, insurer and lender names on them (MyJobMag, checked on 3 November 2026). We cannot prove those pay more, because the ads do not print pay. We can say those are the tools to learn. See what Kenyan employers ask for.

Sector. Who hires is in our look at where data jobs are posted. Banks and insurers were the biggest group. We have no source that compares their pay with a distributor's, so we do not claim a gap.

Scientist or analyst? The scientist figures are in the data scientist salary page. For a software comparison, read what software developers earn in Kenya, and for the top end the AI engineer salary data.

How to use these numbers without being misled

  1. Use the Paylab spread as a rough band, and the Payscale average as a sanity check.
  2. Quote a source and its sample when you negotiate: "Paylab shows KES 40,000 to 155,000 gross for analysts; I am asking for X because I bring SQL and Power BI."
  3. Compare gross to gross. Take-home pay after PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and housing levy is lower.
  4. Ask what each source leaves out: bonuses, medical cover, and whether the offer is monthly or annual.

No school can promise a salary or a job, and neither can this page. The Data Science to AI Engineering programme starts on 11 January 2027, and we have no graduate pay data to show, because the first cohort has not begun. If you want to prepare for these roles, read the Data Science to AI Engineering syllabus and compare it with the ads.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓Paylab gives a spread and Payscale gives an average, so the two are not directly comparable.
  • ✓The Paylab analyst page rests on 25 people, and its related pages on fewer than 20.
  • ✓Only one of the 62 Kenyan data ads we read printed a salary.
  • ✓All sources are rough. Quote the sample size when you negotiate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a data analyst earn in Kenya per month?
Paylab and Payscale give very different answers, and both rest on small samples. The table on this page sets out each figure with its source link, sample size and the date we checked it, 3 November 2026.
What does a junior data analyst earn in Kenya?
No source gives a clean junior figure. Payscale has a small early-career sample, and one Kiambu ad that asked for two to three years printed a monthly range. Both are in the table above with their links.
Are these figures before or after tax?
Paylab figures are gross, before tax. Payscale reports base pay and does not say it is net. Assume gross for all of them.
Why do salary websites disagree about Kenyan data analysts?
They use small, self-reported samples and different measures, a spread against an average. Job titles also cover very different work at different employers.
