Data Science in Kenyan Agriculture: Five Real Uses

Five uses we can point to: Pula uses satellite data for crop insurance, Apollo Agriculture scores farm credit, PlantVillage Nuru spots cassava disease on a phone, Kenya's farmer registry runs on KIAMIS, and Victory Farms hires for drone mapping. Each needs Python, statistics and often geospatial or vision skills.

In this article

  1. 1. Why a farm is a data problem
  2. 2. Five real uses, and the skills each needs
  3. 3. Uses four and five: the farmer registry and drone mapping
  4. 4. What to learn if you want this work

Why a farm is a data problem

McTaba runs coding and data bootcamps in Kenya. This guide is written to be useful whether or not you ever join one.

Picture a smallholder in Kakamega with two acres of maize and a rain gauge that is a bucket. She wants a loan for seed, insurance against a dry spell, and a warning before a leaf disease spreads. Each of those is a data question. The data is satellite pictures, a repayment history, a phone photo of a leaf.

Below are five uses that exist today, each with a source you can open. Most facts come from the organisations themselves, so we mark which claims are self-reported. For the whole career map, see the data science career guide for Kenya. If you want a structured route into this kind of work, see Data Science to AI Engineering.

Five real uses, and the skills each needs

1. Satellite data for crop insurance (Pula)

Pula sells index insurance to smallholders. With CGAP it tested an algorithm that combines satellite imagery with farm-level yield data, to cut the crop sampling needed for area yield insurance, validated in Nigeria and Kenya (CGAP webinar page, checked on 3 November 2026). The same page says Pula facilitated cover for 600,000 farmers in 2017, a figure the organisers report. Pula was also advertising a remote sensing analyst role in Nairobi in October 2026, asking for satellite imagery, vegetation indices, yield estimation, Python, R and SQL (Pula ad on MyJobMag, checked on 3 November 2026).

Skills: Python and R, geospatial libraries, sampling, statistics for validation.

2. Credit scoring for farmers (Apollo Agriculture)

Apollo Agriculture started in Kenya and sells farm inputs, credit and insurance to smallholders. The FAO AgriTech Observatory says it uses remote sensing and AI-based credit scoring and reaches over 100,000 farmers, which is Apollo's own figure and not an independent audit (FAO AgriTech Observatory entry, checked on 3 November 2026).

Skills: classification models, feature engineering, fairness checks. We build the same idea on chama data in our chama credit scoring guide.

3. Crop disease detection on a phone (PlantVillage Nuru)

PlantVillage Nuru is an app that reads a photo of a cassava leaf and names the problem, even offline. It recognises cassava brown streak disease, cassava mosaic disease and green mite damage. Field officers trained farmers to use it in Kenya, among other countries, and IITA reports it outperforms trained extension officers, a claim from the developers' partners (IITA news item, published 23 February 2021, checked on 3 November 2026).

Skills: image classification with deep learning, model compression for phones, careful field testing.

Uses four and five: the farmer registry and drone mapping

4. A national farmer registry and data sharing (KIAMIS and KALRO)

The Kenya Integrated Agricultural Management Information System registers and profiles farmers in every county, so county officers can track registration (KIAMIS, checked on 3 November 2026). KALRO's datahub lists a farming households dashboard, a cooperatives dashboard and a tea growers database, and takes data requests through its sharing platform (KALRO National Farming Households Datahub, checked on 3 November 2026). In 2022 Digital Green and KALRO announced a partnership on secure agricultural data sharing using the open-source FarmStack protocol (Digital Green, checked on 3 November 2026). We found no public count of registered farmers on these pages.

Skills: SQL, data modelling, dashboards, and data protection, because a farmer's name and plot are personal data. Our look at where data jobs are posted shows which employers hire for this kind of work.

5. Drone imagery on fish farms (Victory Farms)

Victory Farms describes itself in its ads as an aquaculture company. In October 2026 it advertised a drone data analyst in Homa Bay to process aerial imagery, build orthomosaics and elevation models, and work with GIS and vegetation indices such as NDVI. It also asked for a data engineer to feed ERP data into a warehouse (drone data analyst ad and data engineer ad, checked on 3 November 2026). That is a hiring notice, not a research result, and we cannot say what the drone programme has achieved.

Skills: QGIS or ArcGIS, raster and vector data, photogrammetry, Excel, and Python for automation.

What to learn if you want this work

Across the five uses, the base is the same: Python with pandas, SQL, statistics, and clear charts. On top, pick a branch.

  • Geospatial: satellite and drone data, GIS tools, vegetation indices.
  • Machine learning on tabular data: credit, risk, yield forecasts. Start with forecasting from till data, which uses the same time-series ideas as a crop forecast.
  • Computer vision: leaf and pest photos.
  • Data engineering and governance: registries, warehouses, sharing rules.

Begin with Python for data science. If healthcare data interests you more, the field has the same shape: see data science in Kenyan healthcare.

Our Data Science to AI Engineering programme starts on 11 January 2027 and costs KES 140,000, or KES 120,000 if paid in full upfront. It teaches Python, SQL, time series, machine learning and CNNs. Its capstone options are financial, not agricultural, so a farm project would be your own. No school can promise a job. See Data Science to AI Engineering.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓Five verifiable uses: satellite insurance, farm credit scoring, phone disease detection, a farmer registry and drone mapping.
  • ✓Most scale and accuracy claims are self-reported, so read them with care.
  • ✓The shared base is Python, SQL and statistics, with geospatial, vision or data engineering on top.
  • ✓Pula and Victory Farms were both advertising data roles in October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is data science used in Kenyan agriculture?
Examples we could verify: satellite data for crop insurance, credit scoring for smallholders, phone-based crop disease detection, a national farmer registry and drone mapping on a fish farm. The sections above link to each source and say which claims are self-reported.
Do I need a degree in agriculture to work in agritech data?
Not always. The Pula ad we read asked for a degree in statistics, economics, geography, information systems or a related field. The Victory Farms drone ad accepted a diploma or degree in GIS, data science, computer science or agriculture.
What skills do agritech data jobs ask for?
Python, SQL, statistics and GIS tools such as QGIS appear most in the ads we read. Satellite or drone imagery experience is a plus for geospatial roles.
Are the figures about these projects independent?
Mostly not. Farmer counts and accuracy claims come from the organisations or their partners. We marked each one in the text so you can weigh it.
