Moringa Data Science Alternatives

McTaba runs coding and data bootcamps in Kenya. This guide is written to be useful whether or not you ever join one.

Our founder led software engineering at Zindua School from January 2023 to February 2024.

We run a competing programme, so we start with Moringa's own words and numbers. Its course page says the bootcamp covers Python, data science, advanced machine learning, LLMs, AI and neural networks. It runs in three tracks:

Third-party listings lag behind. Course Report still lists Moringa's full-time data science course at $1,805 and 23 weeks (Course Report, checked on 3 November 2026). Older articles quote other week counts too. Go by Moringa's own page, and ask admissions to confirm the fee in writing.

Entry is selective. The page asks for basic Python, comfort with high school algebra, and college or university study in a relevant field, finished or ongoing. Your laptop needs an Intel i5 11th generation or Ryzen 5 4000 chip, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. You must also pass a technical assessment (Moringa School, checked on 3 November 2026).

An alternative is only worth it if it beats Moringa on something you care about. So be clear about Moringa's strengths first.

• A fully remote full-time track. A learner in Kisumu, Eldoret or Mombasa can study full time without paying Nairobi rent.
• A long part-time pace. Three evenings a week for almost a year suits someone with a heavy day job and a family.
• An entry assessment. Your classmates start at a similar level, so lessons do not stall for the slowest person in the room.
• Published payment plans. Each track links a downloadable guide to its instalment options from the course page.
• Shorter data courses. If you want analytics without machine learning, Moringa sells that separately, which the next sections cover.
• A curriculum with a partner. Moringa says its curriculum was built with Flatiron School, a US bootcamp.

Four reasons come up again and again when people compare. Find yours, because it decides which alternative fits.

The fee

KNBS puts the 2025 average private sector wage at KSh 1,042,467 a year, about KSh 86,872 a month (KNBS Economic Survey 2026, Table 3.7, checked on 3 November 2026). Moringa's cheapest data science track costs about 2 months of that average wage, before a laptop or bundles.

The entry rules

Basic Python, a relevant college course and a technical test rule out many beginners. A KCSE leaver with no code yet, or a sales manager who studied commerce, may not get in on the first try.

The hours

Full time means 8 AM to 5 PM on weekdays, which leaves no room for a job. Part time means almost a year of evenings. Some people need something in between.

The focus

Some learners want analytics only: Excel, SQL and Power BI for a reporting job. Others want every model shipped as a working product on Kenyan data. Neither group is wrong, but each fits a different course.

If the fee is the problem

Start cheap and prove the interest first. A month of ALX or a Coursera certificate tests whether you enjoy cleaning data before you commit a large sum. If you want a cohort, compare Zindua's one-payment price with ours. For ours: Instalments available, confirmed at onboarding. If you do not meet the entry rules

Our entry rule reads: No coding, data or maths background needed. Zindua takes learners with no prior coding but recommends a STEM background. ALX's Data Analytics track asks for no coding or advanced maths (Zindua School, ALX Data Analytics, checked on 3 November 2026). Worried about the algebra line? If the hours are the problem

Look for evening tracks of about eight months. Zindua's part-time track runs 8 months at 20 hours a week (Zindua School, checked on 3 November 2026). Ours runs 8 months, four sessions a week, 7 PM to 9 PM. Build the week before you pay, using how to learn data science while working.

If you need a credential

A bootcamp certificate, ours included, is not a degree. If the adverts you want say "master's degree in statistics, data science or related", the Open University of Kenya and Strathmore are the honest answer.

Moringa is the better pick for several people. If one of these is you, apply there.

• You want full time, fully online. Moringa runs a remote full-time track. Ours includes in-person sessions in Nairobi on Saturdays. They are recorded, but from Kakamega you lose the room.
• You want more free evenings. Moringa's part-time track meets three evenings a week across almost a year. Ours meets four sessions a week, 7 PM to 9 PM.
• You already code a little. A cohort screened by a technical test moves faster from the first week.
• You want analytics only. Moringa's Excel and Power BI course is a cheaper first step than any of the full data science bootcamps in this guide.
• You want to start before our first cohort. Our next start date is 11 January 2027. Ask Moringa when its next data science cohort begins.

1. Write your one constraint at the top of a page: cash, hours, entry rules or a credential.
2. Open ten data adverts on BrighterMonday or MyJobMag. Note the tools and qualifications they name.
3. Shortlist two options from the table that match both your constraint and those adverts.
4. Send both schools the same questions in writing: total fee under each plan, week-by-week curriculum, refund rules, and who reviews your code.
5. Ask each for three student projects you can open on GitHub, not screenshots.
6. Pick the one whose answers were clearest. Vague answers before you pay rarely get clearer after.

Ours suits beginners who want to go from Python to models running behind an API, a dashboard or a WhatsApp reply. Projects use mobile money, chama and shop data, and the capstone options include M-Pesa fraud detection, Credit scoring, Customer segmentation, RAG support assistant.

It costs KES 140,000 and takes 5 months full time or 8 months part time. Delivery is hybrid: live online sessions on weekdays and in person sessions in Nairobi on Saturdays, all recorded. The first cohort starts on 11 January 2027, so there are no graduate outcomes to show yet.
